I had been running different versions of 5 Little Monkeys in my head but nothing really seemed to work, or didn’t have a point. But then two days ago I was pushing my kids on a tire swing and I was singing different sing alongs I have made up, and when I got to the 5 Little Monkeys, version 3.0, I accidentally started with one monkey and went up in number rather than the traditional way of starting with 5 and going down to 1 – and that’s when it all came together.
We’ve been singing it since, making a tweak here and there. I think it still needs a little polishing (have any ideas?) but I’d like to present to you my version of 5 Little Monkeys…..
One little monkey sitting in a tree
Ze* sings out “let this tree be!”
But the man starts his chainsaw and says “Can’t you see?”
“We need more wood! I must cut this tree!”
So two little monkeys sit in a tree
They sing out “let this tree be!”
But the man starts his chainsaw and says “can’t you see?”
“We need more wood! I must cut this tree”
(repeat with 3 little monkeys)
(repeat with 4 little monkeys)
So five little monkeys sit in a tree
They sing out “let this tree be”
And the man puts down the chainsaw and says “oh I see”
“We’ve got to use less. I will let this tree be”
I like the idea of kids enacting this sing along. I imagine with each verse one more standing with the others and them all bellowing out “Let this tree be!” I think it could make an impression about the value of solidarity, of gathering forces, of working together for a common good. And in the end everyone wins because the man has a change of heart and joins them!
